Adding value to your home by updating your bathroom

The bathroom is regarded by many to be one of the most important rooms in the house, so it makes sense that if you are thinking of selling your home or looking to add value to your home that updating the bathroom is a great choice.

The bathroom is a multi-functional room, an area to get ready for the day ahead, relax and wind down after a hard day at work and a place to wash up and get ready for bed. Here Bathroom Planet talks us through some of the top tips to add value to your home by updating your bathroom.

Check your Plumbing

Regardless if you are keeping the same layout or a repositioning your bathroom furniture to give the room a more functional layout, it is worth taking the time to check the existing pipes to make sure that they are fit for purpose; this is especially true with older properties which may have plumbing systems that are not up to today’s standards.

As with many big jobs, it is advised that you always hire an experienced plumber to make sure that the pipework and any electronics are fitted right and abide by all safety codes.

Now is also a good time to check your fixtures and fittings for signs of wear and tear. Often overlooked fittings such as light fixtures, extractor fans and window seals can be difficult to fix or repair after the new bathroom has been fitted.

Replacing outdated bathroom furniture

Towards the back end of the last century, there was a trend of installing bathroom suites in a range of weird and wonderful colours from bright pink to moss green. Thankfully that trend has seen better days, with many people opting to go back to a more traditional white finish. But just because you have a white bathroom suite doesn’t mean that you can’t add colour.

Tiles are a great way of creating interesting and eye-catching features to the bathroom, whether it is a feature wall, bathroom floor or shower area. You can also add colour by painting the walls or using wet wall panels which are available in a range of natural stone finishes.

Replacing your fixtures such as taps, mixers and showerheads for more modern pieces is also a cost-effective way of changing the look of your bathroom.

Add an en suite or cloakroom toilet

If you have the room, one of the best ways of adding value to your home is by adding an en suite or cloakroom toilet. An en suite, although a luxury for most households is practical in many ways, providing a private space away from the main bathroom and meaning that multiple people can get ready at once.

A cloakroom toilet is a good choice to maximise the available space on the ground floor, meaning that guests don’t need to use the main bathroom and providing accessibility for those who have limited mobility.

So, whether you are thinking of selling your home or are just looking to freshen up an existing space, installing a new bathroom is one of the best ways of adding value to your home.
